Hurricane Shack - Only fools rush in

Image
Starting with a rhythmic guitar riff reminiscent of Saturday night's alright by Elton John, Hurricane Shack's new soulful blues rock offering hits the mark just as all their previous songs have done. Paul Cunningham's songwriting displays a hooky chorus with repetitive lyrics that stick in your head long after listening, quite clearly a warning about making hasty decisions. The well timed saxophone brings those linking riffs that the track would be lost without. The piano also needs a mention, which forms a vital lead part of the intro and middle 8. It's hard not to tap your feet to the beat and end up singing along by the end of this song!

Chloe Leigh - In my mind

Image
I've learnt to expect beauty from Chloe with every release and this song is no different. She starts with a solo vocal which soon splits into harmonies alongside a soothing electric piano which gives off lullaby vibes. Simplicity is key in the production of this song, with an underlying smooth pad and no meddling with lining up piano or vocal parts - keeping it human, raw and real. This helps to drive the listener's focus toward the lyrical content, exploring mental health - past hurts and disappointments, tucking it all away in 'the room in my mind'. Chloe's enchanting voice and words gently caress one's emotions and give us all an opportunity to have a moment of self-reflection and connection with her.

Woodruff - Does She Know?

Image
Emerging from Bognor Regis, Woodruff are the funk band you never knew you needed in your life. 'Does she know?' is a song that explores the emotion of falling for someone who stands out as authentic among a crowd of people hiding behind a mask. Sandwiched between outtakes (who doesn't like a good outtake?) this song brings the funk with bass, drums and guitar that work so well to provide a backdrop to the beautifully layered harmonies. Woodruff do all of their own production in a back garden shed which makes it all the more impressive to be serving up this level of quality in both songwriting and sound. I do wonder who the object of their affection is, and whether she knows that she's been referred to as 'hot candy'!

Ellie Thomas - Confused melody

Image
Talented pianist Ellie Thomas shows her skills in this beautiful piece, purely piano - emanating classical and ragtime influences. The introduction takes the chords where you wouldn't expect, followed by the most engaging arpeggio-style section that pulls on the heartstrings. It then transitions into a ragtime section, followed by a reprise of the arpeggio to end. Confused Melody is a track from Ellie's EP, 'Helping Hand', a collection of compositions that explore the internal processing of challenging emotions surrounding gender dysphoria. Despite having no lyrical content in this piece, Ellie describes it as depicting emotional changes, with a moment towards the end which indicates a move towards a more positive outlook on life.
